I believe the author chose the word "crucible" for the title because the definition caused you to think about how it relates but also has a way of making sense of why it was titled that. The story contains of many different characters with different opinions and stories as to what is going on in their town. The second definition states "different interactions leading to a creation of something new." In the story there is people saying all sorts of different things adding and taking away to what was originally said, because of this happening it leads to a new outcome than what could of been expected.

The Crucible was published at the time of the Red Scare. In class, we discussed that McCarthyism was being used and it reminded Miller of the Salem Witch Trials in the 17th century. Arthur Miller thought that McCarthyism and the Witch Trials were both "a situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new."

A crucible is defined as, “A situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new.” I believe that Arthur Miller picked the word “crucible” as the title of his play because if you break up the definition of the word you can apply it to different parts of the story. For example, “...different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new.”, the ramblings of some young girls caused many people in the town were speculating about witches being real and throwing around accusations of witchcraft being the reason that all of these bad things were happening to them. Which in turn, spun out of control and created the entire ‘Salem Witch Trials’ situation to begin with !! The other half of the definition says, “A situation of severe trial.” I believe that this one kind of speaks for itself but nonetheless... the ‘Salem Witch Trails’ were just one HUGE trial. Whether or not they were proving you were a witch by trials that humans had no way of living to prove that they weren’t witches. Or whether they were testing tor faith because of how religious this town was.

Arthur Miller realistically could have used either definition of 'Crucible' to tell his readers what turmoil the characters in the play will go through. We could come to the conclusion that Miller used the word Crucible in the way that the first definition describes in order to describe the pressure and wrath the accused witches were subjected to, such as their names being sullied all the way to the witch tests that we learned about in class. Although we could argue that the first definition was the intended use of the word it's more widely accepted and probable that Miller had intended the second definition to explain his chosen title of the play. Taking the second definition into account, Miller probably named his play "The Crucible" to foreshadow the trials of the witches, the converging of Witches and Puritans, but to also show how Salem was changed because of the witch trials. Personally I don't think he wouldn't have put this little of thought into the title of his play, but he very well could have named it "The Crucible" purely because it sounds a little creepy. The truth is that the only person that knows why "The Crucible" has its name is Arthur Miller himself.

I think that the auther chose the cusible because everyone is there blameing each other for things that they did not do. And everything is kinda just melting and falling apart people that live like they always have are being blamed for warshiping the devil when the really aren't.

In the Crucible they used many tests to decide whether or not someone was a witch and in some cases they would die either way through the witch tests. They have all these different elements which led them to believe others were witches. The whole play is a trial in deciding who's a witch or not which was kinda of pointless because you would most likely die anyway like discussed in class how some women would get pregnant to stay alive but they would only last until the baby was born because they believed babies were innocent.

I think that the author decided on this title because he thought it would express the book as a whole. The title is what is gonna draw the reader in and should be a vital part of the book. I think "The Crucible" expresses the book very well and portrays what the author wanted it to.

I believe he chose the Crucible because it started out as something small then became something big. When it became and big deal everything just started melting slowing then sped up over time but a short period of time. Everything escalated quickly. I also believe it was because there were trials and one thing led to anything creating something new in everyone’s head to cause everyone to blame anyone they knew or knew of.

I think that the author chose to call this play the crucible because the definition and the entire play fits exactly together. The book is about people going to extreme circumstances to survive and accusing everybody so they are put on trials.

I believe life is like “crucible” don’t let you life will be melted because if you let your life melted your all dreams and all the hard work your life gonna be ruined your gonna go back to zero again and it possible that your life will be broke and think about this if you doing all stupid stuff did you help to make community probably not and remember think before you do something.

I believe the author chose this word because the trails had people going to very crazy extents to get other people killed.

The second definition is a lot more obvious in it's meaning. The town of Salem is forcing people into hard trials that changed their town. The first definition also provides some insight on the title as well, although you might have to think a little deeper. The people accused of being witches could have been metaphorically tossed into a crucible. The heat, or in this case, the people of salem, will eventually kill them, and no matter how promising escaping from the crucible is, it seems almost impossible.

I think the author chose the title "crucible" because in the definition it states," A situation of severe trial that leads to the creation of something new," I think this definition perfectly sits this book because The Salem Witch Trials was a sequence of trials that many women and some men were accused of being witches. These trials changed the dynamics of the town and the history.

I think the author chose this title because of the definition of “crucible” it describes the play and everything the happened in Salem perfectly. Every one is willing to go to extreme circumstances to survive this time.

I feel like the word curcible because witches can create new things and mess with the element, which is what the people of Salem accused the people of doing, even though none of it was true they believed that those women that were at fault could change people and that’s why the people of Salem don’t “dance in the woods”

I think the reason he chose this is because it goes along with the definition of how there is severe trial just like in the witch trials and new elements combining, just like how people are accusing other people that they may never have met but just don’t want to get killed.

I think the author choose the crucible to describe his book because that's what is happening in the book, there are witch trials that are false and not true, also he wrote the book around McCarthyism and how people of salem would accuse people of being a witch because they wanted sometime and they knew accusing someone of being a witch was the way they would get it.

I think he choose the name the crucible because there are severe and harsh trials going on in the story, in our discussions we are often talking about the arguments going on between people and how they are trying to put the blame on others to get their name out of the public eye and survive.

i think it is called the “crucible” because everyone is being blamed for being a witch. That is causing a terror throughout the town and everyone is being blamed as the story goes on.

I think he picked this word because in the Crucible the town goes through very hard trials and they all are different elements in a way so they will mix to make a new town after all the ciaos.

The first meaning could be incorporated into the play because there is virtually no escape for the citizens of Salem, and the town is slowly getting out of hand. And the second meaning is more fitting. Almost everyone in the play was either accusing somebody of being a witch or was accused themselves of being a witch.

I think he picked the word “crucible” as the title because the definition of this word is a situation or a trial of something and this whole thing was about witch trials. These trials were very difficult and were only to make the town around them better even if they didn’t.

Ok so a crucible is a metal container that will be melted by high temperatures and in the witch trials people got ahead of them selves and going crazy about a rumor and everything escalated super high crazy quick! So those go together because the people represent the metal containers and the Hugh temperatures are the witch craft. And the accusations of witchcraft melted the town of Salem :)

I think he chose the word crucible because it is another word for trial. It also talks about how the word "crucible" means changing if elements to creat something new. This applies because the people of Salem changed and got contentious with eachother, the people started to want vengence. This change in the town did create something new, that was the Wich trials. The Wich trials were a way to accuse people and get rid of them so they are not a problem in your life anymore, a way to get vengence.

In the Crucible the people are definitely under a severe trail, with all sorts of different elements such as the opinions of the people, the society itself, and the hysteria. In the end it created a new town without Abigail, Paris, or Mercy Lewis. The title of the play matches the definition really well I think.

I believe that he titled the play the crucible because of the trials faced in the book. The witch trials were caused by Abigail, and because of her the entire town believed in witches. After the trials no one viewed their friends, neighbors, or even family the same. He named the book after the second definition. At least he named it mainly off the second.

I think the author chose the word crucible because the town was surrounded by trees and in the town people were being accused of being witches which is causing hysteria and getting put of control, this represents how blacksmiths use crucibles by putting metal in the crucible and heating it up to melt the metal and then pour it into a cast

I think the author chose the word crucible for this play because of the witch trials. Abigail and a group of girls got caught doing something that they were not supposed to be doing and instead of them getting in trouble for it they start the trials and start blaming everyone else and it’s gets out of control and starts a huge ordeal! I think that’s why the author chose it and I think it fits perfectly!

The second definition of the word "crucible" is the perfect fit for the play. It has correlations to what happens in the Salem Witch trials. We can consider Abigail Williams and John Proctor as the different elements that interacted, if it wasn't for this interaction it may have not led to the creation of the Witch trials and people accusing other people. It was a perfect fit for what was going on during the Salem Witch trials

I think the author chose this title because the crucible was written around the witch trials, and in the witch trials they went through a severe trial with lots of death but in the end they created a less paranoid Salem.

I think he choose the name the crucible because one of the definitions is about a container that can melt metals at a high temperature, and this shows that the town of salem was the same because its just like the first definition. IT all heats up and just gets crazy.

In the first definition a crucible is a piece of laboratory equipment. This "crucible used to heat chemical compounds. The second definition is all about a tough and difficult trial placed on someone, in this case its placed on Salem. With seeing both definition for what the word crucible means, there is no other word that would fit more perfect. With all those people jammed together in a tiny town it was going to happen no matter what.

I think the author chose Crucible as the title because the Town of Salem at the time of this all happening is a lot like what happens in a Crucible, with the Town in confusion and it's like it's all melting.

I believe the Crucible; A situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new, fits the book perfectly. Throughout the book, it talks about witches and how they were accused on the daily. These "witches" could be men, women, or children. They were accused and then sent to do a trial to see if they were proven guilty or innocent.
